Jewel July 2015

Jewel July 2015

This is Jewel the last time I visited her. She is on the right hand side peeking at me. That is her new friend she hangs out with. She still remembers me after 3 years living at the Parrot Refuge. She came down to me and sang and danced with me, the little song I taught her. Then she buggered off as if to say I'm doing my own thing now Mom.

Winfield BC. At The Kangaroo Farm

Phillip at the Kangaroo Farm. This friendly African Gray Parrot trying to make friends with Phillip. Parrots love people who sit still.

Nela giving a kangaroo a pet. So soft!

Jewel Sept 2013 Taking Some Sun

Every time I come to visit Jewel she flies right over to me and sits on my head. Then she begins to say ever word I ever taught her. Then she nibbles on my ears and that is when I make her get off. But it doesn't last long and she is right up on me again. She will sit with me the whole time I am there. She'll only take a couple of small brakes for a snack and a drink of water.

Jewel giving me the eye. She is so sweet. I love visiting her. It is sad when I have to say goodbye.

Jewel is always jumping around when I am there, it's sometimes hard to take a picture of her. A lot of the other parrots come and sit on me at the same time and I don't want Jewel to get upset and bite me. So I'm always shooing them off.

In December Jewel was moved to the big Amazon flight with her friends. They moved 20 of them all together. I'll be going for a visit in the spring. I can't remember what that flight looks like. They all seem to be doing well I was told.

Jewel In Her New Home at Coombs

Jewel in her new home August 2013. She is happy and healthy. She has so many friends and they are always hanging out together.
When I first came around to see her she did not say anything. I was sure that was her, but I had some doubts when she did not speak to me.
Then the second time I came around to see her, she started with the "Hi Nela!" and "Make Oliver sing". I knew it was her and it made me so happy.
I hung out with her for a while and then when it came time to leave, I cried. But in my heart I know she is in the right place.

My friends who know Jewel very well came to Coombs with me to see Jewel. Agatha, Linda, and Phillip. The last picture of Jewel, she is taking flight. I had moved back to take a picture of everyone and she was following me.

Tour of the World Parrot Refuge Coombs Vancouver Island

When I visit Vancouver Islands I stay with some long time friends of mine. We went together to visit and tour the Parrot Refuge. Below are some of the residence. These parrots love to view the people as much as we love to view them.

This is my friend Jim and these two parrots just love him. They are trying to remove his buttons and zipper. They jumped off but returned within seconds.

This is Jim and Shirley, getting their camera ready to take pictures. Both of them loved the Parrot Refuge. They found it so much fun interacting with all the parrots.

This is a Miniature Macaw and he follows you as you walk along the parrot flight pen.

Vancouver Island Parrot Refuge.

My parrot Jewel now lives at the parrot refuge on Vancouver Island, British Columbia Canada. I brought her there on April 6, 2013, Saturday afternoon. Jewel was so excited to see all the other parrots.

What they do with new parrot arrivals is keep them in their own cage, keep it locked and then just put the cage into the large parrot flight pens. After the birds get use to each other, which usual is about three days, they let the bird out, and it is free to fly with the other parrot.

Right away certain parrots took a liking to Jewel. There was even one parrot that had the latch on Jewel's cage off and the door open within seconds. One of the workers spotted the open door before Jewel could get out and had it closed and better secured, so no other parrot could break her out.

I left Jewel there and took a tour of the rest of the Parrot Refuge. At the end of the tour I dropped back in to see how Jewel was doing. Jewel was busy making friends with all the new parrots. She was acting very happy taking in her new surroundings

Jewel was being well entertained and had no time to pay attention to me. I was assured that she would be happy here and not miss me.

I went back on Sunday to see Jewel. This is me standing in the open flight pen where I put Jewel's cage. I had four parrots land on me while I was in there.

This is Jewel sitting in her cage with all the other parrots around her.

Another picture of Jewel. It looks like she can't wait to get out

This time when Jewel saw me, she was happy to see me. Yelling "Hi Nela. Hi Nela." Over and over again. The person that runs the refuge told me they were going to let Jewel out on Monday and let her fly around with all the other parrots.

The green parrot sitting on Jewels cage has taken a liken to her and has not left the cage since Jewel arrived. He is waiting for Jewel to get sprung.

This Hyacinth Macaw kept jumping on me. What a beautiful parrot.

A Parrot For A Pet

Parrots make wonderful pets, provided we care for them properly. Too often the lack of proper parrot knowledge leads to an unhappy and unhealthy parrot. The parrot owner is left frustrated and the parrot is neglected or gotten ridden of .

Lets enjoy our parrot friends and make them a part of our family by educating ourselves before we decide on a parrot as a pet. Talk to an experienced parrot keeper first. They have a wealth of knowledge and first hand experience. Also contact the local parrot club in your area. They can advise you in general and also put you in contact with someone who has a pet parrot of the variety you are most interested in.

The picture above is my pet parrot Jewel. She is a Blue Fronted Amazon. The summer of 2009 I went on a cross country trip with her. We went from one coast of Canada to the other coast. This was the travel house I had made for her. She liked it quite nicely.
